Glendale Animal Hospital offers a senior discount of 10 % on all services, excluding food and a few specific medications.
We also offer a multi-pet discount to pet owners with 3 or more animals that are seen for yearly vaccinations (and heartworm tests for dogs) at Glendale Animal Hospital. All animals must be kept up to date unless exempt for medical reasons. This discount includes all services and excludes prescription foods and a few medications.
All other discounts are at the discretion of Glendale Animal Hospital and are generally reserved for animal rescues and breeders.
Dogs should be seen yearly, semi-yearly if over 10 years of age.
Rabies vaccine and distemper combo vaccines are considered core vaccines (for all dogs). Rabies can be given as 1-year or 3-year. Every dog over 16 weeks of age is required by law to be current on rabies, receive a county certificate and tag, and to be registered with their village (by owner).
After the puppy series of vaccinations, we recommend the distemper vaccination at one year, then at 3 year intervals. All other vaccinations are optional and the recommendation for them is based on lifestyle and risk assessment, i.e. bordetella, lepto, and lyme We do not recommend Giardia or corona vaccines at all.
Cats should be seen yearly, twice a year over 12 years of age.
Rabies vaccine for cats is only 1 year duration. A 3- year vaccination is recognized by the state of Illinois but is the canine product which has been linked to cancer in cats and, therefore, never recommended at this animal hospital. The feline distemper vaccine is also considered core (essential) for all cats. It is given in a series for kittens, a 1 year booster, then every 3 years, Feline leukemia is the only elective feline vaccine we recommend. A series of 2 in all kittens, a 1 year booster for all cats, then yearly through adulthood for only cats at risk (outdoors). All cats under the age of 2 have heightened susceptibility to FELV. FIV, giardia, and ringworm vaccines are not recommended at this hospital.
At any time during an animal's life, the Glendale Animal Hospital veterinarian may suggest stopping all vaccinations due to age or a health problem (i.e. cancer or immune system disease). In this case, the veterinarian will aid you in any problems that may arise with your county animal control.
We recommend that all cats and dogs are checked for parasites at least once a year and dewormed at least once a year.
We recommend that all dogs should be tested for heartworm disease yearly in accord with the American Heartworm Society's recommendations. This yearly test is necessary to buy heartworm pills or request a prescription for heartworm pills. The in-house heartworm test we run also screens for Lyme disease, Ehrlichia, and Anaplasmosis (all tick-borne diseases). A plain heartworm test is also available.
All kittens should be tested for FELV and FIV as soon as possible. This test must also be repeated after the age of 6 months and during any future illness.
All animals admitted to the hospital, whether for the day or longer, will be up to date on both core vaccines and Bordetella for dogs. If not current, they will be updated upon admission and the animal's owner is responsible for the cost incurred. The only patients exempt from this policy are those determined to not be healthy enough for vaccination by a Glendale Animal Hospital veterinarian.
Pre-operative testing is recommended for every animal undergoing an anesthetic procedure. At minimum, an ERD (Early Renal Disease) test to determine if the kidneys are healthy enough for anesthesia and to indicate other systemic disease is recommended for all surgical patients. Blood tests may be recommended to screen for immune system problems, as well as kidney, liver, or glucose abnormalities. A signature will be required by any patient's owner that declines recommended tests.
An IV catheter is also recommended for all surgical patients.
Permission will be sought from a patient's owner for any other testing recommended based on abnormal findings from pre-op results.
Permission will be sought from a patient's owner for any other surgical or dental procedures we may find necessary.
All deciduous teeth (baby teeth) will be extracted at the time of surgery in any patient 5 months of age or older without contacting the patient's owner. That owner will be responsible for the cost of such extractions.
Please restrain your pet in the reception area. For the safety of your pet and others, please keep cats in carriers and dogs on a tight leash. Do not allow your pet to "visit" other animals without permission for the owner. Any other patient in the hospital waiting area may be aggressive or ill, putting your own animal at risk, so please - keep your pet close and under control at all times.
At the discretion of the attending
veterinarian, you may be asked not to restrain your own pet during exam or
treatment. This request is made for your own safety and ours. While your pet
is out of their regular environment, behavior may be unpredictable or uncharacteristic.
We are trained to deal with difficult behavior.
